If you're searching for a waterproof bag, you'll see dry bags, waterproof rucksacks and roll-top backpacks. They're related but not identical. This guide helps you pick the right one and the right size.
Dry bag or waterproof rucksack?
A dry bag is a simple waterproof sack with a roll-top closure, mainly used to keep kit dry inside another pack or on a boat. A waterproof rucksack adds shoulder straps so you can carry it on your back. A dry bag rucksack combines both, which suits hiking in the rain, camping and water sports.
How a roll-top closure works
- Pack your kit and push out excess air.
- Fold the top over on itself at least three times.
- Clip the buckle together and tighten the straps.
The more folds, the better the seal. A roll-top bag is designed to resist rain and splashes. Avoid long submersion unless the manufacturer states it is rated for it.
Which size: 20L or 30L?
- 20L is a compact day pack: a spare layer, lunch, a water bottle and a few essentials.
- 30L gives room for overnight kit, a jacket, food, and electronics in an inner pouch.
If you're unsure, choose the size that fits your usual day out, and remember that you can always roll the top down further for a smaller load.
Packing tips
- Keep spare clothes in the middle and heavy items close to your back.
- Use a small inner pouch for phones, keys and cameras.
- Dry the bag inside and out before storing it.
