With so many waterproof jackets on the market, it's hard to know what really matters. This guide covers the features that make a difference, whether you're walking, shooting, working outdoors or just dodging the school-run showers.
Waterproof, water resistant and showerproof
These terms are not the same. Waterproof jackets use membranes or coatings plus sealed seams to resist sustained rain. Water resistant and showerproof jackets cope with light rain only and will soak through in a downpour.
Waterproof ratings
Waterproofness is often given in millimetres (hydrostatic head). The higher the number, the more water pressure the fabric can take. Many jackets built for regular outdoor use are rated at 10,000mm or more. You may also see EN 343, a European standard for protective clothing against rain and wind, on workwear and heavy-duty jackets.
Breathability
A jacket that keeps rain out but traps sweat will leave you damp from the inside. Breathable membranes let moisture vapour escape. If you'll be active, hiking, stalking or working hard, breathability matters as much as waterproofness.
Features worth checking
- Taped or sealed seams stop water entering through stitching.
- Adjustable hood with a peak keeps rain off your face.
- Storm flap over the zip adds protection from driving rain.
- Pockets positioned above a pack belt or harness are handy for walkers and shooters.
- Packable design folds small for a rucksack or a bag.
Lightweight or insulated?
A lightweight shell is ideal for walking and travel, and you can add layers underneath. Insulated or fleece-lined jackets are warmer for winter, stalking and standing still.
Which jacket is right for you?
- Walking: a lightweight breathable shell with taped seams.
- Shooting and field sports: a quiet-fabric smock or jacket with large pockets.
- Work and farm: a tough, reinforced jacket, ideally EN 343 rated.
- Everyday and travel: a packable raincoat you can carry anywhere.
