Deerhunter is a Danish hunting and outdoor clothing brand, but behind the name is a family textile business with roots going back to 1927. This guide covers where Deerhunter comes from, who is behind it, and what the technical names on the labels actually mean.

Who owns Deerhunter?

Deerhunter is part of F. Engel, a family-owned textile and clothing company based in Haderslev in southern Jutland, Denmark. The Engel family has been making functional clothing since 1927, and the business is now run by the third and fourth generations of the family.

A short history of Deerhunter

  • 1927: F. Engel is established, building experience in functional workwear.
  • 1985: Deerhunter is launched by Carl D. Engel, a keen huntsman, who combined his passion for hunting with the family's clothing expertise.
  • 2009: Deerhunter is granted a royal warrant as a Purveyor to the Royal Danish Court.
  • Today: the brand is sold in more than 40 markets worldwide.

The aim has stayed the same since 1985: durable, functional hunting and outdoor clothing that is wind and waterproof and breathable, with camouflage suited to the terrain and the type of hunting, at sensible prices.

Deerhunter technology explained

Deer-Tex membrane

Deer-Tex is Deerhunter's own waterproof, windproof and breathable membrane. You will find it in the Pro Gamekeeper Jacket, which carries a 5-year warranty, and in the Eagle Waterproof Hunting Jacket, which also has taped seams and an insulated, quilted lining.

Stormliner membrane

The Gamekeeper Shooting Jacket uses the Stormliner membrane for waterproof, windproof and breathable protection, with a stretchy, water-repellent outer fabric for freedom of movement when shooting, beating and stalking.

Waterproof and breathability ratings

Ratings are given as millimetres of water column (waterproofness) and grams of moisture vapour (breathability). The Muflon Pro Light is rated 10,000 mm and 10,000 g, using a recycled polyester shell with Deer-X-Dura stretch panels. The Lady Chasse jacket is rated 5,000 mm and 5,000 g. A higher number means more protection in heavy or prolonged rain.

Teflon Shield finish

The Strike Stretch Trousers use a Teflon Shield treatment to make the fabric water and dirt resistant, with 4-way stretch and pre-shaped knees for movement.

Stretch fleece and Thinsulate

The Eagle Fleece Jacket is a 320gsm stretch fleece, and the Recon Knitted Beanie is lined with 3M Thinsulate for warmth.
