A Brief History of Smartwool
Smartwool was founded in 1994 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and became known for bringing merino wool to performance socks. It is now part of VF Corporation and is widely used by hikers, walkers and hunters.
Why Merino Wool Socks?
Merino wool socks are soft, cushioned and good at managing moisture, which helps reduce blisters and keeps feet comfortable for longer. They also resist odour better than most synthetic socks. For more detail, see our walking socks guide.
Smartwool Hike Socks
Our Smartwool range focuses on hiking socks in men's and women's sizes, in ankle and crew heights.
- Hike Light Cushion: a light, breathable cushion for everyday walking and warmer days, such as the Hike Light Cushion crew socks and the ankle socks.
- Women's Hike Light Cushion: available as crew socks and ankle socks.
- Hike Targeted Cushion: extra cushioning in key areas, for example the women's crew socks.
Smartwool Hunt Socks
The Hunt Classic Edition Maximum Cushion over-the-calf socks are made for hunting and cold, long days in boots.
How to Choose Hiking Socks
Match the sock height to your footwear: ankle socks suit low shoes, crew socks suit most walking boots, and over-the-calf socks suit tall boots. More cushion adds comfort for longer days. Always try socks with the boots you plan to wear, and see our guide on how to choose walking boots and our wide fit walking boots guide.
