Quick answer: a waxed jacket is a cotton jacket coated in wax to repel rain and wind. To clean one, sponge it with cold water and never machine wash it. Re-wax it about once a year, or whenever water stops beading on the surface.
What is a waxed jacket?
A waxed jacket is made from cotton treated with wax, giving a tough, water-repellent and wind-resistant finish. It has been a country staple for decades and suits shooting, farm walks, dog walking and everyday wear. The finish ages with character, so a well-kept jacket looks better over the years.
How to choose a waxed jacket
- Fit: leave room for a jumper or fleece, but not so much that the jacket flaps.
- Lining: a tartan or cotton lining is classic, while a quilted or padded lining adds warmth.
- Length: longer styles cover more when walking or sitting, shorter ones are easier for driving.
- Pockets and collar: deep pockets and a storm collar make it more practical in cold wet weather.

How to clean a wax jacket
- Brush off dry mud and dirt with a soft brush.
- Sponge the jacket with cold or lukewarm water. Do not use detergent, soap or fabric softener, as they strip the wax.
- Pay attention to cuffs and collar, then wipe with a clean cloth.
- Hang it up to dry naturally in a cool, airy room.
Never put a waxed jacket in the washing machine or tumble dryer, and keep it away from radiators and direct heat, which can melt the wax.
How to re-wax a waxed jacket
- Clean the jacket first and let it dry fully.
- Warm the tin of wax dressing gently in a bowl of hot water so it softens.
- Rub a thin, even coat into the jacket with a cloth, working into seams, cuffs, collar and elbows.
- Leave the jacket somewhere warm, not hot, for several hours so the wax settles into the cotton.
- Wipe away any excess and repeat on worn patches.
Use a dressing made for waxed cotton and follow the instructions on the tin. If your jacket looks dry, pale or rain no longer beads, it is time to re-wax.
How to store a wax jacket
Hang it on a wide hanger in a cool, dry place. Avoid storing it in a plastic bag, and let it dry before putting it away. Wax can stiffen in cold weather, but it softens as you wear it.
Wax jacket or waterproof jacket?
A wax jacket is tough, windproof and traditional, but needs occasional re-waxing. A modern waterproof jacket is lighter and lower maintenance. Compare more in our best men's waterproof jackets guide, and see what to wear on a shoot in our shooting clothing guide.
Waxed jacket FAQs
Can you wash a wax jacket in the washing machine?
No. Machine washing removes the wax. Sponge it clean with cold water instead.
How often should I re-wax my jacket?
Around once a year for regular use, or whenever the jacket looks dry or water stops beading.
Is a wax jacket waterproof?
A properly waxed jacket repels rain very well. Check the product description, as some are water resistant while others are fully waterproof.
Can I wear a wax jacket in summer?
Yes, on cool or showery days. Lighter, unlined styles suit milder weather.
