A Brief History of Icebreaker

Icebreaker is a New Zealand outdoor brand founded in 1995 by Jeremy Moon. It was one of the first brands to build a business around merino wool for base layers and everyday outdoor clothing, working with merino growers in New Zealand. Today it is one of the best-known names in merino.

Why Choose Merino?

Merino wool is soft, breathable and warm even when damp, and it resists odour better than most synthetic fabrics. That makes an Icebreaker merino base layer a good choice for walking, hiking, shooting and cold-weather work. For more on building a warm outfit, see our layering guide and our guide to merino wool walking socks.

Icebreaker Base Layers: 150 vs 200

The numbers in Icebreaker product names, such as Merino 150 and Merino 200, refer to the fabric weight in grams per square metre. A lower number is lighter and cooler, while a higher number is warmer.

Icebreaker Accessories

To keep warm at the extremities, there is the Merino 200 Oasis beanie and the Oasis glove liners, which fit under a pair of waterproof gloves.

How to Choose an Icebreaker Base Layer

Pick a lighter weight for high-effort activity and mild weather, and a heavier weight for standing around, cold mornings or low activity. A base layer should fit close to the skin without being tight. Wear it under a fleece, softshell or waterproof jacket. Our waterproof jacket guide and softshell jacket guide help with the outer layer.
